Helpful Tips for Your Stay

Finland is a safe, welcoming and easy country to travel in, even if this is your first time abroad. To help you feel more prepared and comfortable during Lightning Youth Worlds 2026, we collected a few useful tips for your stay.

Be Ready for Changing Weather Both On And Off Shore

If this is your first time visiting Finland, you may be wondering what to bring for sailing and what the conditions will be like on the water.

Swimming and enjoying sauna

Remember to pack:

  • A swimsuit
  • A towel or preferable two towels
  • Sunscreen
  • Sunglasses with a strap (recommended)
  • A water bottle (drinking tap water is safe in Finland)

The water might be surprisingly cool. You can check the latest water temperature for Lake Tuusula (Tuusulanjärvi) here, second last on the list:

Note! The temperatures are shown in degrees Celsius (°C).

What will the weather be like?

Weather conditions can change quickly, especially on the water. Before your trip, you can check the latest forecast and local wind conditions:

The event takes place just after Midsummer. In southern Finland, daytime temperatures are typically around 15–25°C, although warmer days above 25°C are also possible. Evenings and mornings can feel much cooler, often dropping to 10–15°C. For this reason, we strongly recommend dressing in layers:

  • A T-shirt or lightweight base layer
  • A fleece or hoodie or a warm jumper
  • A windproof and waterproof jacket
  • Quick-drying shorts or trousers
  • A change of clothes for after sailing
  • A beanie or a cap

Even if the weather forecast looks warm, bring an extra warm layer. Most international visitors are surprised that Finnish summer weather can change quickly during the day.

For evenings and social events, bring comfortable casual clothes suitable for spending time outdoors with friends. You do not need formal clothing. The atmosphere is relaxed and informal, and comfortable outdoor clothing is the best choice.

What Sailing Gear Will You Need?

You need to bring your own sailing gear unless specifically instructed. Always wear a life jacket when sailing or in a boat. Remember to pack the following:

  • Your own life jacket
  • Quick-drying sports clothing
  • A warm fleece or hoodie
  • A waterproof sailing gear
  • Spare clothes for after sailing
  • A cap or hat
  • Sunglasses
  • Sports shoes that can get wet
  • A small backpack or dry bag for personal items

Do You Need a Wetsuit or Drysuit?

It’s smart to bring your own wetsuit or drysuit in case the weather gets cool. The organizers will help and advise participants if special clothing is needed because of water temperature or weather conditions. Even on warm days, Finnish lakes can feel cold compared to many other countries. If you are sensitive to cold water, you may find a wetsuit more comfortable.

A Note for First-Time Visitors

Finnish summer weather can vary a lot. A sunny morning can become windy or rainy later in the day, so it is always a good idea to bring an extra warm layer and a waterproof jacket. The best approach is simple: dress in layers and be prepared for changing weather!

Paying for Things

Finland is one of the most cash-free countries in the world.

Most cafés, restaurants, grocery stores and public transport services accept:

  • debit cards
  • credit cards
  • Apple Pay / Google Pay and other mobile payments

You usually do not need to carry cash with you. Just make sure your card works internationally before traveling.

You Can Drink the Tap Water

Finnish tap water is extremely clean and safe to drink. In fact, many locals prefer tap water over bottled water. You can refill your water bottle almost anywhere:

  • airports
  • hotels
  • restaurants
  • public buildings
  • event venues

Bringing your own reusable water bottle is highly recommended.

Allergies for insects

During the summer in Finland, mosquitoes can be abundant, especially near lakes. The most effective way to avoid mosquito bites is to wear long-sleeved shirts and long trousers, especially in the evenings when mosquitoes are most active. Light-colored clothing attracts mosquitoes less than dark clothing. Mosquito repellents are also effective. When staying in accommodation, it is advisable to keep windows closed in the evening.

Although mosquitoes can be annoying, they generally do not spread dangerous diseases in Finland. The most common problems are itching and skin irritation. Travelers may still want to bring anti-itch cream or antihistamines if they have sensitive skin.

Ticks

Ticks are prevalent in the whole of Finland and the tick season lasts from April till November all over the country with the exception of the northernmost regions. Ticks are usually found in grass, shrubs, hay and undergrowth. Ticks can also be carried by an animal. A small number of ticks spread diseases such as borreliosis.

In case of a tick bite, you can remove the tick attached to the skin yourself. The risk of borreliosis infection from a tick that was attached to your skin less 24 hours is minimal.

Finland Is Very Safe but Stay Smart

Finland is considered one of the safest countries in the world, and people are generally honest and respectful. Still it’s important to:

  • keep your personal belongings with you
  • travel together with your teammates
  • let your coach or team lead know where you are

If you ever feel lost or unsure, don’t hesitate to ask for help. The organizing team is here to support you throughout the event from arrival to departure. If you have questions, concerns, or need assistance at any point, please reach out to us or your team leaders.

The Venue and Moving Around

Lightning Youth Worlds 2026 takes place at Vanhankylänniemi in Järvenpää. The venue combines outdoor spaces, event facilities, and peaceful scenery to create a unique competition experience for all participants.

If this is your first time in Finland, the environment may feel very different from busy cities. Everything is close to nature and calm suburb. Here’s a few things you should know before arriving.

What Is Vanhankylänniemi Like?

Vanhankylänniemi is located near Lake Tuusula, about 30 minutes from Helsinki Airport. The area is known for:

  • green outdoor spaces
  • walking paths
  • lakeside views
  • historic surroundings
  • quiet and safe atmosphere

Most event activities, accommodations, dining areas, and gathering points will be within a short walking distance from each other.

Find out more about the area https://www.visittuusulanjarvi.fi/en/

Walking Around the Venue

The easiest way to move around the venue area is by walking.

We recommend bringing:

  • comfortable walking shoes
  • weather-appropriate clothing
  • a small backpack or day bag
  • a reusable water bottle

Paths around the venue are generally safe and easy to use, but some outdoor areas may become slippery if it rains.

Because summer days in Finland can be long and active, remember to:

  • rest when needed
  • drink enough water
  • wear layers for changing temperatures

Public Transport in Finland

Finland has reliable and safe public transportation.

In the Helsinki and Järvenpää area, you may use:

  • trains
  • buses
  • taxis

Most public transport tickets can be purchased:

  • through mobile apps
  • ticket machines

If you are unsure how to travel somewhere, ask your team leader or event volunteers for help.

Rental Cars

Public transportation in the Vanhankylänniemi area is limited and will not provide a convenient or reliable way to travel. To make transportation easier and more flexible, families and coaches are recommended to rent a car during their stay.

If You Feel Lost or Need Help

Events can sometimes feel overwhelming, especially in a new country. Please remember:

  • you are not alone
  • volunteers and organizers are there to help
  • asking questions is always okay

There will be event organizers available throughout the venue to guide participants and support teams during the competition.

Wind conditions and curious information for sailing on Lake Tuusula

Lightning Youth World Championship at Tuusulanjärvi will be sailed in a venue known for its highly variable and tactical wind conditions. During late June, winds are often influenced by local thermal effects. Even though the lake is located about 30 km north of the Gulf of Finland, a sea breeze frequently develops during the afternoon when conditions allow. This thermal circulation creates changing breeze patterns, shifts in direction, and varying pressure across the race area. In addition, the relatively small size of the racing area and the proximity of the shoreline can locally influence wind direction and wind strength. Competitors can expect conditions that reward good observation, adaptability, and tactical decision-making.

Despite the open racing area, wave conditions on the lake generally remain modest. Because local winds are often variable in both direction and strength, long periods of steady wind are uncommon, limiting the development of large waves. Even in stronger breeze conditions, the lake usually produces only short and relatively small wave patterns.

The challenging and constantly changing wind conditions also create significant demands for the race organizers. Considerable effort is required to set fair race courses and provide the most equal racing conditions possible for all competitors.
